Re: Easy HP out of 258?

1. Ignition upgrade (TR or HEI)
2. New carb (Weber, etc.)
3. Header (will likely lose some bottom end at the expense of hp gain)
4. Cam (Jeep makes a good one that will give a good increase in bottom end and a small hp gain)
After the above mentioned ones you start getting into 4.0 head conversion, FI, big money.

Re: Easy HP out of 258?

You already have the easy horsepower. How much do you want from a 258ci inline, pulling a 4000 lb. truck with fat tires ?
There are lots of little things you can do, (like mentioned above) but you can only gain so much with a clumsey little truck motor. Everything you do to add HP on the top end is going to cost you torque on the bottom end.
I went thru this 20 years ago with a ford 6 header/intake/carb/ignition/cam... It made power, but for the same money, I coulda had a V-8 with another 100 hp. and alot better design. The old saying, "There's no replacement for displacement" rings true, thats the limiting factor here. A larger engine in a mild state of tune will be less tempermental, more durable, and less hassle.

Re: Easy HP out of 258?

A 304, 360 or 401 would be the better option vs. putting tons of cash into the 258 the cost of a mopar fuel injection kit is a little over 2 grand and will probably get your power up to about the 160-180 hp range but for that cost you could get an amc 401 and get it rebuilt then throw a good carb, igintion upgrade, and headers on it for about the same price and have much more power. The only reason not to get a 401 that your axles/ drive train wouldn't be up to the upgrade in power.
