auto/manual tranny swap

I know this is a subject that's probably been hashed over 1000 times-sorry to ask again (but I'm going to anyway) I think that during the course of my postal conversion to 4x4 I'm going to swap in a manual tranny. I would like a five speed, which I think narrows my choice to t-5, t-5, or t-5. How hard is this? What is involved? I've been told that hydraulic clutches are the way to go. Is this true? How about a hanging pedal conversion (so I don't get as much water in through the giant factory hole in the floor that I will patch). Are there any other overdrive trannies I can use? I've got the stock 232 ci motor that I will be adding a 4.0 head to, and I would like to do this without adapters if possible (read that CHEAPLY). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Dont forget the AX-15, you can still bolt a D-300 up to it.

true, but I was looking for something a little stronger (the reputation of the ax-15 precedes it).

The AX-15 will take I-6 power with no problems. Maybe you are thinking of the AX-5 used behind 4-cylinders, or even the BA-10 used from '87-89 that sucked. The AX-15 is a good transmission.

The T-5 (or any 5 speed for that matter) might be a little long for a postal. That is only if you want to add a transfercace. If you stay 2 wheel, it would fit no problem. For a 2 wheel application, check under a couple of AMC cars and see what they use.

Re: auto/manual tranny swap

didn't the t-5 come in any CJ's? How's their reputation for strength? What parts would I need for the swap? Has anyone done an auto to manual swap?

From the Off-Road tech pages:
The T-5 is a light duty 5 speed transmission used in CJs from 1982 until 1986

man I'm surprised that noone knows about this. I don't want to sound like a whiner, so I'll let it drop after this post.
