Dana Questions

Ok, there are a couple of them.
1st: Are the Dana 41's in a CJ2A any good??
2nd: What is a Spicer 25? I have heard that CJ2A's have a spicer 25, and a Dana 25, which is it? are they the same?
3rd: Is the 25 anygood?

Re: Dana Questions

The Dana 41 is the forerunner of the Dana 44. I have heard that the axle shafts are weak.

The Dana/Spicer 25 is similar to the Dana 30. It is considered weak infact many people replace teh 25 with the 30. Something to consider though is that the Dana 25 was offered stock with 5.12 gearing. Makes you stop and think if maybe it is stronger then we give it credit.

Re: Dana Questions

dana and spicer are one in the same.. dana bought out spicer.. or something like that.. also those d25's... had some pretty beefy hubs on them.. which should convert over to a d30..

Re: Dana Questions

The D25 was offered with 5.38 gearing stock, not 5.12's (Zuki's had 5.12's from the factory though, offset in the rear, with 1 piece axles, dropout 3rd member, and 7.5" ring gear). The R&P is larger than a D30 (7.75" vs. 7.13") and the axle shafts were the same diameter (1.13"), but they were only 10 spline which is MUCH (on the magnitude of 175%) weaker. The military D25's (M-38, M-38A1) usually had 4.88 gears as well instead of the 5.38's.

The D41 was used from '46-'50 and had a 7.75" ring gear as well, with 1.00" axle shafts that were 10 spline.

The D44(2) by comparison was made from '50-'70, has the 8.5" ring gear, 19 spline shafts that are 1.25" in diameter. It is approximately 150% stronger than the D41.

Re: Dana Questions

My 1955 M38A1 has the dana 25, 44 and 5.38:1 gears. One of these days it will make a good trail rig. Lightweight will be the goal of that one.
