axle questions

I have a 98 TJ with the 44 rear. How do I check to see if the lockright is working? Can you check it like you would aregular limited slip (jack it up and spin one wheel, opposite wheel should spin in reverse direction)?

If it has some kind of locking devise in the rear the tires should spin in the 'same' direction.

Aren't they usually open until a load from the drive shaft puts torque on it.?

Here are a few ways.

Jack up one tire and then the other with the transfer case in neutral. Try turning the driveshaft. If you can't turn it, it's working.

Jack up both tires with the transfer case in neutral. Turn one tire. If the other tire turns the same way, it's working. Sometimes it will ratchet if you get the locker in just the right spot.

Find an empty parking lot with dry pavement. Turn the steering wheel all the way to one direction. When you have your foot on the gas, you should hear the inside wheel chirping. When you let off the gas, you should hear it clicking.

Did you install the Lock Right yourself or did it come that way? There is a procedure in the manual for testing. Put jeep in gear. Jack up both rear tires and support with jack stands. Have a helper help you turn both tires forward till they lock (come to a stop). Have him hold his tire forward while you turn yours backwards. It sould click then. Then both forward again then you hold forward and he'll turn backwards. Than reverse the whole procedure starting backwards.
