AMC 360 smog restrictions

I recently bought a '72 AMC 360 for my CJ7. I read somewhere that the smog restrictions on this particular year restrict the engines performance. How/ or which smog components need to be removed to take advantage of the engines capability?
The '71 360 makes 245 hp
The '72 makes 175hp
Thanks - jesse

Re: AMC 360 smog restrictions

The ratings for a 71 are gross ratings... What emissions "stuff" do you have on the 360 right now? What type of exhaust? Intake....???

Re: AMC 360 smog restrictions

I do not know what type of smog restrictions I have on it now. The intake manifold and exhaust manifold are stock. The exhaust is a Y pipe to a single out the back. I don't know why the numbers between the '72 and '71 are so different. If there are any smog components that can be removed I'm fair game I just don't know what they are...

I would think that most if it would be the camshaft. Early seventy's smog cams were pretty poor. Now would be a good time to change it.
