new tow toy

I decided to wait on buying the CJ and get a truck for towing the jeep to all the places i plan to go this summer. I bought an 84 chevy 3/4 ton with a 6.2l diesel. It has about 220K miles on it, all power, new A/C, paid $1200. Think that's good enough to tow a 5000 lb. jeep on a trailer?

Re: new tow toy

Should be a tow rig though it might be a little low on power I think it's at about the 130hp mark though. If you want more power look into the kits that banks performance has. Is it a 4x4? Still not a bad find even if it's a 2x4 though if it's a 4x4 when it dies you could probably put the axles under your tj or on a cj for cheep.

Re: new tow toy

The 6.2 will tow the Jeep no problem. They are known to be anemic, so it might take a while to get there, but you won't hurt the engine at all. One thing that helps the 6.2's is to swap out the injectors for the injectors on a 1 ton and turn up the pump a little bit.

Re: new tow toy

If you have the power to tow the jeep will depend a lot on the gearing that you have in the truck,I used to have a 3/4 ton chevy 6.2 4x4 with 3:23 gears and it didn't have much bottom end pulling power but it was faster than most on the highway. So the gears you are running will make a big differance.

You may be a bit short on power compared to a modern p/u, but I applaud your choice of a vehicle with an appropriate spring rate, plenty of wheelbase, & heavy-duty brakes. You may not get there fast, but you should get there IN ONE PIECE.
