Bear w/ me, one more carb ?

First of all I've gotta say, WOW! I never imagined a 258 engine could run so smooth and quiet until I started mine up with my newly installed Rochester on top. Runs great so far.

However, when I look down into the carb, I see daylight through two small holes on the firewall side of the carb!?

That doesn't seem right, it will be able to suck unfiltered air through the holes to go directly in to the intake manifold! That doesn't seem right.

Can anyone tell me why these two holes about the size of a pin head on the back of the carb might be there? Should I seal them or do they have a purpose?

What kind of rochester, and where are the holes? Above or below the choke plate?

It's a Rochester 2G and the holes ard very low on the carb, about an 1/8" above the base of the carb, where it bolts to the intake manifold. There is one on either corner on the back side facing the firewall.

If it's running that good, just pack some silicon in them.

yeah, kinda what I was thinking, just didn't know if they served any purpose.
