Drilling Shackle Bolts?

Has anyone drilled their shackle bolts and put in zerk fitting for greasing them? I have grade #5 bolts, and I am wondering if is is safe to drill and tap them for zerk fittings?

Just don't drill a huge hole in it, 1/8" should do it. Put a spare bolt in the glovebox, incase I'm wrong. : )

Re: Drilling Shackle Bolts?

I'd reccomend a small chamfer around the cross holes when you're done. It might help to keep them from breaking, I don't know the brinell on a grade five bolt off the top of my head. If they're going to bend break, it will be through the cross hole(s).

If your kidneys don't hurt, it's not a real Jeep!

Re: Drilling Shackle Bolts?

I have done it with some grade 8 bolts and it has worked well for 3 years. We have a lathe at work and the machinist was able to drill them for a 1/8" hole.
