Where is the computer/ECU/MCU found?

Anybody know specifically where to find the computer/ECU/MCU on an '82 CJ8? Thanks. Steve

look on the inside of the drivers side fender.
It should be a black box.

Re: Where is the computer/ECU/MCU found?

On my '84 scrambler, it is mounted inside under the dash behind the glove box. it is about the size of a car stereo and is a silver metal box. I thought that's where all '80s CJs had theirs.....take a look.

Thanks for the response. There is a box underneath the radiator fluid overflow reservoir, but I think that's the ignition module. Is that what you're referring to? Steve

There is no silver box behind the glove compartment. Is it behind the black air vent? Up top? To the side? Anybody else have an idea? Thanks. Steve

Re: Where is the computer/ECU/MCU found?

When I said behind the glove box it is in between the glove box and the firewall tucked up above the air duct stuff from the blower motor. If you were to remove the cardboard insert (called glovebox) you would be able to see it tucked up there. To get another point of reference, look under the hood next to the battery and you will see a cable of wires going through a rubber grommet through the fire wall (and to the computer).

I can think of two reasons it could possibly not be there...

1) someone installed an aftermarket efi kit (you would know about this though)
2) someone did the nutter bypass (eliminates computer from circuit) and decided to take the computer out.

Incidentally, I installed the fuel injection kit and no longer need the stock computer....jeeprookie or anyone else need it?

Re: Where is the computer/ECU/MCU found?

In my 80 cj-7 with 258 the ECU is on the forward part of the shotgun side fender. It is 4" X 4" X 1 3/4" and is made of aluminum. There are 6 wires leaving it that enter 2 plugs, one with 4 wires the other with 2. It is mounted with 3 screws.

The best way to find yours would be to start at the distibuter. There should be 3 wires coming out of that (black, orange, and purple) these join a green wire from the negative side of the coil and enter the 4 wire plug of the ECU.

Hope this helps.

Wilhelm

Nothing there. Could there be a third reason that it might not be there? Could it be that my '82 didn't come with a computer? Thanks. Steve

Re: Where is the computer/ECU/MCU found?

Sounds like what you're describing is what I know to be the ignition module. Am I way off base here? My understanding is that the module and the ecu are two different things. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks. Steve
