4\" lift axle shim question

So I got my new tires and wheels last night (Will post a pic when it stops raining)...33" with 10" black steel wheels and I need to get an alignment. I have the 4" pro-crap lift and was wondering what shims to put in the front axles to get the caster correct. I saw some 2 degree through 6 degree shims but don't know which to use. Any ideas??? Re: 4\" lift axle shim question

You want to shim the FRONT axle? I've got 4" susp on my 88 and have shims on the rear axle (not sure on the deg, it came with the kit) and don't need any on the front, 35" tires drive and wear fine after 10K mi.

Re: 4\" lift axle shim question

Thanks Ed, I have the shims in the rear axle to help with the vibration problem. I heard you will need them in front to correct the caster angle. I am taking it in to get the alignment done and don't want to get charged more money for them to loosen 8 bolts and slide shims in there. In other words, I prefer to do all the work I can myself and not have to pay someone else extra to do it.

Re: 4\" lift axle shim question

Did you put longer shackles on? I didnt have a problem with caster until i put my shackles on. I dont think higher springs change the caster. They just put the axles down 4in lower then they were stock. I may be wrong. If i am someone please correct me.

Re: 4\" lift axle shim question

That's what I needed to know. No, I didn't put longer shackles on it, so that would be really nice not to have to dick with the caster. Thanks pontiac58

Re: 4\" lift axle shim question

You shouldn't need shims with just lift springs. The angles should be the same, just farther from the frame. It's when you add lift shackles that caster gets thrown off.

Re: 4\" lift axle shim question

Was you alginment off to begine with? If it was good then it should still be good. Its a straight axle just use a tape measure and give it like a 1/8 tow out. That is all i have ever been told to do with a straight axle. I know the books will say different but it works.
