Here is an interesting problem that has sprung up on my '83 CJ-7. The front disc brakes lock up and will not release (both sides) after running the jeep for a while. It seems that the hydraulic pressure builds up in the lines and will not release. The more you pump the brakes, the tighter the grip on the discs by the brake pads. It gets to the point where the front wheels are locked up. The calipers have been removed, inspected and put back in place. This jeep does have the power assist brakes so I'm guessing that somehow the master cylinder is not releasing the brakes due to a vaccum loss or some similar problem. Anybody with any insight here or had a similar problem and what is the solution. Thanks.

I have a 90 Jeep Wrangler
and the same thing happened the cylinders in the calipers were bad. The boots around the cylinder were damaged and the cylinders bound up. They still moved but didn't move back in easily enough. I could drive but in about 10 mins or less the brakes would end up grabbing and not letting go. They were smoking and hot as can be. I just replaced them, rebuilt calipers were about $20 a shot.

Thanks for the reply. Guess we'll rebuild the calipers and go from there. Any more suggestions from anyone?

You might want to check your brake lines...if the inside of the brake line brakes down the rubber can hold the pressure
inside the lines...you may want to replace them with the calipers.
