Help! Steering gear problem? CJ7

You guys have helped me before, how about this one. 85 CJ7, power steering, my daily driver, my baby. I can hardly keep this rig in the same lane, it is swervy, and every time I try compensating with the steering wheel it really snaps and goes in the other direction. I can be going down the road holding the wheel perfectly still and it is still swerving all over the road. There is some bump steer, but even on a smooth road I get the same problem. Everything seems to be very tight, ball joints, stabalizer, tie rods, and drag links. Is this my power steering gear(box)? If so, what can anyone tell me about AGR's II steering gears? I am quite sure I cannot afford one for my baby, I don't even know if I can afford a replacement steering gear. Or am I looking at the wrong problem. Any and all comments would really be appreciated, I am scared to drive.

Re: Help! Steering gear problem? CJ7

Sounds like there is some play in the box or steering shaft. You should be able to tell if it is the shaft by having someone hold the shaft near the box. See if there is play in the wheel.

As far as the AGR II box, I had a leaking/loose stock box and replaced it with the AGRII. I love it. The ratio is much more drivable. You might want to do a search on this....if I remember there was a thread a month or two ago about a camaro steering box that was identicle (or really close) the the specs for an AGR box. If I were going to do it again, I would definitely find out more about that since it was like $100 compared to $300.

Re: Help! Steering gear problem? CJ7

sounds like either a caster problem or the bolts are loose on the steering box. do you have longer shackles??? check the bolts on the stewering box
