Auto. Trans. in a CJ5?

I have a '75 CJ5 with a 350 V8 a T18 trans. and a Dana 20 T-case. I want to swap out my standard for an auto. My problem is with the short wheelbase. I was thinking that a TH350 is shorter than a 700R-4 so it might work. Does anyone else have any other solutions? I would like to keep my 350 and I have a 4" lift. I dont have very much room between the fan and the radiator so sliding the engine forward is not really an option. Any suggestions would be welcome and appreciated.

Re: Auto. Trans. in a CJ5?

I think that you can get a grill from a postal jeep and bolt it up without any problems, but I'm not sure. If you can, that should give you about three inches to scoot everything forward and buy you some driveshaft length. Four wheeler magazine did a series where they converted a postal to 4x4, and they had an auto tranny (727 torqueflite) AND the I-6 motor. Check it out-it ran from april 1993 to august 1994. They actually bolted the transfer case (dana 300) on in the april 1994 issue. They never said anything about problems from the short driveshaft-in fact they said the whole setup worked great. You can probably find the back issues at the library and photocopy them if you're interested. That's what I did. Good luck.
