How do I start my engine out of the vehicle????

What needs to be connected for me to be able to start my engine????

The engine is still on the frame but the harness is completely gone. The solenoid is there and the starter and everything else, just don't have any wires running to distributor(plug wires are there), no computer. This is a '82 factory 258 with no modifications. All I want to do is get it running to check my head gasket for leaks.

Thanks,
Tom

Well... I could tell you how to hot wire it from under the hood... Take a positive lead FROM BATTERY to the red wire on the Coil- this will give the firing system power all you need to do it turn it over now. You have to have the Ignition Module Hookedup. Take a screw driver with a insulated handle and cross the two posts on the top of the solenoid this will start the engine and let it run... Hope that helps... You could wire up a switch to the solenoid sort of like a ignition switch.. anymore questions?

I was wondering if it would work without the ignition module? I guess not. Oh well, I will work around that.

Thanks,

Or you could get some plumbing fittings for one of the sensor holes, and plumb it for an air line, then pressurize it to twenty pounds (for water tightness)

If all you want to do is check your head gasket, just to a compression check on each cyl. You don't need any ign stuff hooked up. You need a big red hot wire for your starter and another hot wire with a switch in it to control the solenoid. Do a leak down test on each cyl and you will quickly notice if you have any leaks! If you don't have a comp checker, they are about $15 at the parts store.

Hey- Or buy a radiator pressure tester. It spins on like the radiator cap, then you pump it up and pressurize the system. Matts got the right idea too!
