HELP, my CJ5 turns like a bus

I just got a 78 CJ5 and I am having trouble with the steering. The linkage is tight, there is very little play in the wheel, but the turning radius is HUGE. My parents 95 wrangler turns nearly twice as sharp. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or better yet, a solution. The jeep has a 2.5" lift and 31x10.50 tires. Any help at all would be most greatly appreciated.

Re: HELP, my CJ5 turns like a bus

Two ideas. 1) the YJ steering box has a 17:1 ratio for much faster, tighter turning than the CJ's 14:1 steering ratio. This I know will make it a bit wider in the turns. 2) just guessing on this one but I know the YJ has adjustable steering stops on the axle so when I put larger tires on my YJ with the stock steel wheels, I can adjust the turning radius so the tires won't rub the frame, I don't know but maybe the previous owner din something like this.
I go out in the woods with two friends in Trackers and I am the only one that doesn't have to make 3-point turns between the trees. go figure.

you have larger tires.. on your narrow track axles.. more than likely someone adjusted the stops.. so the tires wont rub..

Re: HELP, my CJ5 turns like a bus

Is it turning both right and left, or just one of the turns? If you can turn really sharp one way and not very sharp the other way try to adjust the threaded part that connects the tie rods together. I had a problem with this when I was trying to straighten the steering wheel out. I actually had to take the tie rod ends out, and think about how they needed to go back to correct the steering problem.
