transfer case np 231

I have an np 231 transfer case and deciced to change the oil in it.instead of pulling just the bottom drain plug I also pulled the plug that secures the shift detent poppet. The problem is about a gallon of oil came out but only about 1 1/2 quarts will go in. I've never had a 231 apart, does the case retain any oil in the front of the case and if so how does it get there.I really want to drive my vehicle but I'm afraid of running some part of the case dry. Also it's not coming from the transmission as it is still at the proper level. please help

Re: transfer case np 231

If you have a five speed the then the only fluid you should have seen come out would have been red. The fluid in your transmission is probably 90 weight gear oil. The fluid in your transfercase should be ATF fluid. Your transfer case will only hold about a quart and a half. If the fluid is good in the tranny, and the transfercase is full than you have nothing to worry about.
