Late model YJ/TJ mirrors on 90 YJ?

Well, I parked in a tight spot today @ work, and suffered some consequences of doing so. There was a fair amount of room for the other people to get into their vehicles, that is, assuming neither were 350lbs+. Apparently the guy on my passenger side weighed in @ 400lbs or so, because I came back to find my passenger side mirror smashed against the window.

I have a 1990 YJ with those wonderful small shaving mirrors.
Hell, are they even good for shaving? I haven't looked at the difference between how later model YJ mirrors are bolted on, but thought I'd throw this question up in the air... any way to have some TJ/later YJ model mirrors on my 1990??

Any information would greatly appreciated...!

Re: Late model YJ/TJ mirrors on 90 YJ?

My friend put later model YJ mirrors on his '88 Wrangler. I believe only two of the three holes lined up, which was good enough for him. I assumed the doors and hinges were all the same for '87-'95, but apparently they are not. Maybe someone else on the board has more knowledge on the topic.

The mirrors he used, do you know if they were simply hinge-mount mirrors, or if he used the existing location on the doors? There seems to be a ton of hinge-mount kits out there, but unfortunately, this is only a solution if I had half doors. I have full steel doors!

No, these were the factory later model mirrors that came with the newer style Jeeps '93 and up??? I just checked the 4 Wheel Drive catalog, there was a difference in the '87 and '88 hinges only, so you should be ok. They should bolt right on.

The upper hinge plate that bolts to the door is different. I think its longer and I know it has three tapped holes in it for the mirror to bolt to. The pattern of the bolt holes is a triangle like the hinge plate but it goes the other way. I think you can swap the right and left mirrors and just turn the mount pad around so that the first two holes can be used with the hinge mount bolts.

Re: Late model YJ/TJ mirrors on 90 YJ?

Thanks for the information! I called my local 4x4 shop, and they were suggesting to just go with some hinge mount mirrors, and they have some asthetic tricks to fill in the holes that will be left on my doors. Not sure if I liked the idea entirely, but I'll have to decide what to do by Saturday. Anyways, thanks for your info, hopefully it turns out to be a functional alternative in contrast to their suggestion... I'll let you know how it turns out.
