low reading on voltmeter

Ok, the voltmeter on my 84 cj7 when I crank it first thing in the morning the volts are normal at 14 but after it warms up and idles down to 1500 for the second half of the warming up and also at idle the volts drop to 12 and then when the parking lights or headlights are on they go down to 10, there is a slight sqeak..squeak..squeak from the alt belt but I don't think it's slipping enough to make my volts drop. Is my alt on the way out or what other problems might it be?

Re: low reading on voltmeter

The alternator may be going out, I would pull it and take it someplace you trust to be tested. If it checks out ok, then I would clean all the grounds on the vehicle. That may help....

Re: low reading on voltmeter

If you have a Sears store near you they will do a complete charging system
check for you. The last time I did it, no charge, but that was a few years ago.
