Questions about TR upgrade and EGR valve

I am hoping to have a day off sometime in the near future, so I bought all the TR upgrade stuff. Do I need to change the sparkplug gap, or keep it stock? Also, is the TFI coil supposed to have an exposed square metal thing around it? It looks for all the world like a transformer.

Second question. My EGR valve hasn't worked in four years thanks to a friend's "knowledge" who disconnected the vacuum and did nothing else. I think that the valve must be leaking or something, so I figure I'll either replace or plate over. Any advantages or either? If I reinstall the entire vacuume system, and the EGR valve, do I need to install anything else? I currently don't have ANY EPA stuff on my 304.

Re: Questions about TR upgrade and EGR valve

You don't want to buy a new EGR valve. The money would do you a lot more good if you spent it on your r'lationship. As to the vacuum system, the most critical item other than the EGR is the spark advance. As the engine warms up the vacuum to the spark advance changes, and so does the vacuum operated carburetor air valve in the air cleaner. If you need a complete smog/vacuum diagrammy I have them in the 304 engine booklet that I made. And yeah, the TFI coil does look like a transformer.
