tach installation help

I'm having trouble getting a tachometer to register anything. How am I supposed to connect it to the ignition coil negative side? Do I just stick it in there and slide that cap back on or do I need to strip the green wire coming out of the coil and put it on the wire that way? I tried to just stick it in there and the tach just jumps every 2-3 seconds from about 900 to 400-500 rpms, and doesn't go up at all when I rev the engine. Thanks for any help.. Andy

Re: tach installation help

you have a bad connection. you need to splice the tach wire into the - wire on the coil.
