AMC 360 EFI options?

So what are my options for EFI on an AMC 360? Howell? Edelbrock? What?

And are all of them $1200 or more like the Howell kit?

Holley has the pro-jection. It is TBI, and supposed to be very reliable if you can get the fuel pressure correct from the pump.

Plus they have a cool company name.

Same as the 304, Howell, Pro-Jection, junkyard TBI (cheaper howell), or to get similar results Q-jet.

I believe that the Howell uses GM/Chevy TBI components for the actual fuel delivery as well. If you could figure out what you need and just pull it from a yard. I know that Howell does use some specifically made components for their applications(computer and such), but all hardware and most wiring is Chevy TBI.

Thanks guys... I honestly would prefer a "bolt on" kit... I am gonna have enough troubles with the rest of my plans, and figuring out the EFI system from scratch is not something I want to deal with...

Re: AMC 360 EFI options?

If that is what you are looking for then I really think that you can't go wrong with the Holley. It is stand alone, you don't have to worry about splicing into the existing wiring and such. Either way you can't go wrong with a TBI set up, bang for your buck.

Isn't the Edlebrock a MPI set up. I have heard nightmares about getting MPI systems working correctly. So if this is your first jump to FI you might want to stick to a TBI, Holley or Howell.

Ok... I kinda though the TBI Howell version seemed pretty simple since it is based on the stock GM TBI...

I just keep hearing nightmare problems about the Holley units - then again, maybe that is from the older non-digital EFI kits they had...

Re: AMC 360 EFI options?

I have a circle track racing buddy and they wouldn't touch the old non-digital versions, but they like the newer digital version. They run them all the time. The only current problem that I have heard has to do with fuel pumps burning up(he keeps several laying around). It is supposed to be mounted lower than the tank. They don't like to mount them in places that can easily get yanked off(kinda like a Jeeper wouldn't). About the only place to mount them(and if you call Holley about a Jeep application) is on the bottom of the frame under the rocker pannel. Real exposed. I asked him the other day about mouning it on the skid plate for the gas tank for a Jeep, and he said that it was possible(I really don't know much about a FI system). Won't be under the tank, but will at least be on the bottom(they now are mounting them towards the top of the frame rail, probably why they are burning so many up). Maybe mount it on the side, with a lip welded onto the skid for protection against trail damage.

Re: AMC 360 EFI options?

Yeah, a friend went through this on his Holey injected Suburban...

My way around it though will be a relocated tank up above or between the frame rails (I guess I didn't mention this will be on a J20 frame and Toyota cab w/ CJ hood & grill )

Thanks for the suggestions along the way... Picking up the J20 tonight & I get to see what kind of condition it is in

Re: AMC 360 EFI options?

Now that will be a southern hybrid. I've been toying(pun intended) with getting a Toyota for hunting chores. Remove bed, put in box, leave little front fenders, put on some boggers, factory electric lockers, spring over, removable winch for front and rear, no paint. ARRH ARRH ARRH. Just a beater. But I'm sure that the little miss will object, though.
