How bad are wheel spacers?

I'm thinking about adding a pair of 1.5" billet alluminum spacers to the rear of my amc 20 quadratrak rear end. The quadratrak rear is quite a bit narrower than a narrow track rear. It has moser one-piece shafts. Also I live in PA and I read somewhere that wheel spacers are illegal here. Does anyone know.

Re: How bad are wheel spacers?

These are bad. All you are doing is placing more stress on the axles by using more leverage. I wouldn't do it unless you really had to for clearance if you were running some wide tire/rim combo. Even then I would probably switch to a narrower setup. If you are running 35x12.5's like your signature says, I wouldn't think you would have any clearance problems. I run a 76 CJ-7 with Q-trac and the AMC20 as well. My tires are 33x12.5's and I have no width issues...

Why to you want to widen it out?

Re: How bad are wheel spacers?

there is an article in 4-wheeler mag about wheel spacers. aprial 99 i think they mentiond all the bad stuff. such as more stress on the bearings and the axel shafts but they said if you stay under 2 inches its almost the same as getting 10 inch wide wheels and haveing like 2.5 inches of back spaceing. i actually called around to try to find some but they are to much. i'm actually going to go with either cj wide track or find some off of at waggy. i like the wider stance. i have narrow track. now. and i barly need fender flairs. wouldn't you get a little more wheel travle with wider axels?
