1979 304 Horsepower?

i am in the process of rebuilding my 1979 AMC 304 cid engine and am curious to know why the specs sheet list the 1978 and earlier 304s at 150 horsepower, and the 1979 at 130. i would imagine it is an emissions issue but would appreciate any specific help. Thanks, Scott

My data says the same thing, and I suspect that it is the smogola camshaft that does it. After all, leaving the exhaust valves open for half the intake stroke doesn't exactly enhance performance. I know in the GM V8's unless you swap the cam, they are real piggy and the fuel mileage is in the dumper.

Emissions during that time period was the thing that killed all the V8s.

On that same note I am probally going to be rebuilding my 304 soon and I am wondering, if I order a camshaft from a older 304 will that help boost my HP.

ooops its a 79 cj7 with the 304 and t-18a combo, by the way.

Re: 1979 304 Horsepower?

I _HIGHLY_ recomend the crane cams H-260 grind camshaft for the AMC 304/360's. I personally know of 5 engines this cam is used in (including mine) and all reviews of it are outstanding. good power without sacraficing torque. not lopey, and a good strong idle. Aditionally I have an edelbrock intake and carb, so my mileage has been shot compared to the motorcraft 2bbl. A friends 360 with the 2bbl and the h-260 didn't see too much of a performance improvemnt, but it did run better than his stock cam.
