Winter mileage on a tj gone for sh_t.

HI
Have listed every gallon of fuel since I got TJ in the spring.
In the last month I have gone from 24 MPG to 17 MPG with a 2000 TJ, 4.0, std.

There are not check engine lights.

Can it be running fine in open loop condition??????

Doug from ontario.

Re: Winter mileage on a tj gone for sh_t.

Let's think about this.

Are you warming it up? If so, you're losing mpg.

You're moving COLD fluid through every nook and cervice in the axles, transfer, and tranny until they're warmed up. So again, you're losing mpg.

Also, the computer keeps it a little higher in the RPM department, working like a choke to keep it running. Even at 17, you're doing well. We got 19.1 mpg last Friday on the way to get the digital camera. The highway was 45 mph, the TJ was warm, and it was a LONG trip. Little to no stops, so we should have gotten the best mpg for the winter. We do have 3.55 gears and are running 31" tires, so that'll throw the mpg off a little. In the summer we get 18-20 mpg anyway. A headwind would also hurt the mpg.

Doug, your mileage is great. I have a 1998 TJ with the 4.0, 3.73 gears, and 31 inch tires. I get an average of 15 MPG. The best I have ever gotten is 17 or 18. I live in the Northwest and they oxygenate the gas during the winter to reduce pollution. This process kills my mileage by at least 2 MPG. This may be the case where you live.
