YJ Passes the MA Dyno!!! :)

Good morning from the East Coast, BBS.

The ol' 208,000 mile YJ passed the stupid Dyno emissions test this weekend, gang!!!

For those of you who didn't catch my failure post - had a high NOx reading on my first test, with CO and HC well within limits. NOx was like 3 times my limit. . Put in a new EGR valve (dealer wanted $100 !!! if you can believe it. NAPA was $74). The old EGR valve didn't work when vac was applied. With the new EGR valve, the Jeep passed with flying colors, NOx down to 3.-something GPM, which I think is grams (gallons?) per mile.

So, with the weber 32/36 carb, GM HEI, cat converter in place, pulse air system completely removed and plugged at the exhaust manifold and at the cat, all the pulse air solenoids, etc, removed, EGR and PCV still in place, vac advance running off manifold vac, new oil change, new plugs, cap, and rotor, a carbureted YJ will pass the new dyno emissions in Massachusetts. ...resulting in one happy Pete (and one happy Jeep that doesn't have a huge R on it. )

(This information provided simply for information purposes only, and in no way states that you should attempt to pass emissions this way, or that these modifications are right for your Jeep. Also, MA does not have a 'visual', so no harm is done, and nothing is 'snuck by' - all that matters is what comes out of the pipe, as it should be.)

Good luck, and clean-air Jeeping,
Pete

Re: YJ Passes the MA Dyno!!! :)

Thanks very much for the info. Here in Jersey '80 and older only get an idle tail pipe check. I have made some changes to the emission system when I changed to an '85 engine w/o air injection tubes and the pulse air setup. I plumbed the output of the air pump/diverter valev direct to the exhaust pipe just down from the header. I'll keep my fingers crossed but I think It'll be OK. I'm all for cleaner air, think what toll takers at toll boths have to smell all day, The way some states are administering it is bad.The bottom line should be what comes out of the pipe.
