U Joint Bolt socket??
I was going to remove the U Joints in my front drive shaft this morning and find that is not a regular bolt head. I think it has a star head. Anyone know what tool is need to remove these? I looked in my haynes manual and it calls them U bolts.

Jeep info: 83 CJ 7 with auto trans, 300 transfer, 30 front axle.

Re: U Joint Bolt socket??
The bolts on mine had regular nuts on ' you have straps or u-bolts holding them on? If I had to make a guess, I'd say it probably takes a 12pt socket, instead of a 6pt.

Re: U Joint Bolt socket??
I think I may have straps. This is my first time to mess with these so I am not sure. These bolt heads look like a torx bit with alot more sides. I may not be making any since here. I think I will go to Sears and look at what they have.

Re: U Joint Bolt socket??
yes its a really small torx socket.

I bought one at Autozone years ago. they are easy to strip ( the bolts no the socket)
so carefull! a toothbrush or wire brush works well to remove hte greasy mud from them to get a good grip.

you can buy replacement bolts at the dealorship, the heads on normal bolts are too large to fit .

probably better to just change to a strap type yoke, then spend the $2 each for eh "special" bolts though.

Re: U Joint Bolt socket??
An 8mm 12 point socket will work. Must be 12 point though!
