I got ANOTHER YJ fuel gauge and this one does something even weirder. It works (gives accurate fuel level reading) fine for about 15-20 mins and then it goes all the way to F when the truck warms up. Anyone else experience anything like this?
I don't pay much attention to mine. I just use the odometer. Mine goes Waaaay past full when I fill up and takes forever to get to the half way mark but one it hits half way it drops off and the engine runs dry after 80km. It also bounces around a lot near the empty mark. I just can't trust it.
This proably won't fix your gauge unless the problem is in the tank.
Have you checked with a Chrysler dealer to see if all the recalls have been taken care of, there are 4 for the 89 YJ, the last one on the list is the gas tank sending unit gasket. If it's not been done maybe you can get them (Chrysler dealer) to let you check out the sending unit in the tank while they have it off replacing the gasket for free.
I did the search here http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/proble...ls/recmmy1.cfm and found that my 91 YJ had 5 recalls, (I'm the 6th owner of mine and I bought it last summer with 105k miles) So I took it to the neighbor hood Jeep dealer and found out that there was one outstanding recall left (the gas tank sending unit gasket) so they made an appointment and fixed it for free. Ohh, I Love that word!
