Size of CJ5, will I fit?

First, I am new to the forum and want to say hello.

I have found a smokin deal on a 76 CJ5 but won't have a chance to look at it until tomorrow. Question is, will I even fit? I am 6'2" 190. I have squeezed myself into a '52 M38 and a '58 CJ5 but wasn't the least bit comfortable in the drivers seat. Are the later model CJ5's any more accomodating?

In a word NO. But then driving a jeep is not about being comfortable is it.

This one is going to be totally up to you. Different people are going to like different things. Some love the "glove like" feeling that a small vehicle gives, while others feel trapped(can't spell chlostrophobia). You just need to get out there and see if it fits. No one could tell you for sure, b/c people are so different. Sounds to me like you don't like small spaces though.

I'm not sure what year this change occured but my 1980 has an adjustable seat made possible because Jeep relocated the gas tank under the rear of the vehicle, which you could do if your gas tank is under the seat. Just dig up parts from a junk yard.
Also you could put in a smaller diameter steering wheel and gain a little room.

Thanks for the info / advice. If it works out I will probably be a regular here. I have owned a YJ and two XJs but am a newbie to the CJ world.

Re: Size of CJ5, will I fit?

I just thought of one more thing that might help you be more comfortable in the CJ. There where some that came with a tilt steering column these are pretty rare but one of the guys here was just selling one I think it was Boston Mangler but I'm not positive. Also I have read some articles on people useing GMC steering columns they claimed that they bolted right in because Jeep bought steering columns from General Motors in those days there where two that were suggested in the article.

I'm only 5'8" and about 155 and I'm comfortable driving but the seat is all the way back. Getting in and out is a pain, but it's a Jeep thing and might have something to do with my short legs!

Re: Size of CJ5, will I fit?

It's honestly hit of miss. I am 5'10" tall and 215 lbs, and I like my Scrambler, plenty of room, but can't drive my older brother's '79 CJ-5 for the life of me. I just don't fit into it well. He says it's all in my mind, he's 6'0" and 275 lbs, and he says it drives just fine. How he can even get in and out of the thing is beyond me, but he can make it sing on and off road. If it doesn't fit well, just change it, put different seats or the tilt column in it (Mangler is selling one).

Re: Size of CJ5, will I fit?

I'm 6'0 and 200 lbs. (give or take alittle) and I love my '77 CJ-5 I wish it were a 7, but eh, whatca gonna do? Gettin in reminds me of the high jump in middle school, and I feel like I need to strap a parachutte when getting out, but its a labor of love. Once I get in behind the steering wheel tho, Its pure heaven (cept for the cracks in the concrete). I have the origonal steering wheel, as well as the non-tilt collumn. I've put in seats, I think steelhorse, but I don't recall.

But then again, I was driving my '94 ranger with the seat full forward and a 12" speaker behind the seat (purely for sound, not bump) its just how tight or loose you like to drive.
