Air filter for a 151

I bought this '81 CJ-5 with a GM 151 a couple weeks ago. I was going to give it a basic tune-up including a new air filter, but the one I got from the parts store did not fit. The number on it was CA184 made by Fram. It is 2 1/4" tall and is round; and the one I took off was about 1 7/8" and oval. The housing that the air filter looks like a stock one (mabey not stock for this Jeep though). My question is how tall is a stock filter? I also looked the filter up at another place with different brand and it was the same size. If someone could measure it, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

If the one you took out fits the housing, see if you can find ay numbers off it so that it can be crossreferenced. Or just take it in and have them match one up.

Why not spend 35 bucks and get a K&N? They last for life and help performance. Every car I've owned has gotten a K&N in it.

Re: Air filter for a 151

I just got one today that fits. Took the old one in and matched it up. I was wondering if the housing for the filter was switched, the books were wrong, or if this was just an oddball.

I would think about getting a K&N, but I plan on swapping engines after I finnish the frame-off on my '74 (that's taking forever). Get that General Mess of Crap (GMC) out of there.

Thanks again.

At least the GM motor will last, it's more than than stupid Ford POS tranny does, or the cheesy 5 bolt hubs, or the weak 2 piece rear axles. I love my GM151, best little motor out there. It's one of the only things I kept original.

Re: Air filter for a 151

Yeah, the 151 is probably fine if you get a good one. This one has just been abused for 20 years and needs rebuilt, bad compression, pretty sure it needs new rings.

Re: Air filter for a 151

I just wanted to let you guys know while we are talking about 151s that they came in various GM cars that in some of the Pontiac Fieros have the 151 with fuel injection, I know a guy who has one and isn't driving it so I'm trying to get him to sell it to me cheap.

Re: Air filter for a 151

Didn't I just see a guy that tweaked his, in a magazine, and got 145 hp out of it? Mine was rebuilt, so it gets 20+ mpg, and has the power to burn the tires in 2nd (OK, so maybe not BURN, but spin in deep mud). It'll also run at any angle, has never failed to start, and it just an awesome motor. I do plan on swapping it out later, for more hp, but just to run larger tires in the spring Maine mud.
