Catalytic Converter Question and great Borla deal

I have an '87 YJ. I have a leak in the exhaust system. I took it to Midas this morning for an inspection and they told me that starting from the pipe behind the headers till the tail pipe is all rusty and rotted and should be replaced. He showed it to me while it was on the lift and there were some pretty noticeable holes in there. The cat was also shot, he said. When you hit it, you could hear things rattling around in there. He said I could leave it for now but it is not doing anything in it's condition and that it would have to be replaced before my next inspection. Anyway, I ordered a Borla cat-back system. Got a great price from Carparts.com ($297 delivered to NY). They have it for $360, and if you tell them quadratec has it for $295, they'll meet it and give you a 10% discount. Anyway, I'm not such an auto expert and was curious about the cat. I know it filters pollution, but are there upgrades for it? Does it make sense to get on for a 6 cylinder, an upgrade? Is the generic replacement good enough? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Catalytic Converter Question and great Borla deal

There are aftermarket catalytic converters, smaller and less restrictive, but you better check the laws in your area before buying one. Some areas will not allow ANY mods to anti-pollution controls.

BTW Donny, if you ordered a catback system you are still going to have to replace the pipe between the manifold and the cat, it won't come with what you ordered.

I realized that. I figured whichever mechanic i use to install the cat back will put in that pipe and the new cat. Unless you think I should do otherwise. Thanks.

Re: Catalytic Converter Question and great Borla deal

The muffler on the Borla Catback for my 90 YJ had a 2.25" inlet which needed an adapter to fit the 2" outlet on my cat. You'll probably have the same problem, so be prepared.

Where did you get the adapter from?

Re: Catalytic Converter Question and great Borla deal

i have a Random Tech. cat conv. on my 94 ram and absolutely love it! it did cost a little more, but its well worth it. let me know (email) if you need more info. i may be able to help get you a deal on them too. do a search for "Random Technology Catalytic Converters" and cehck out their website, very impressive! when i get my project scrambler done (401 v-8), i think i am going to run Cats only, no mufflers. low pollution, good sound, great power! matt

Re: Catalytic Converter Question and great Borla deal

Any muffler shop can buldge out a 2" to 2.25" section to make an adaper.
Especially with the very maulable Borla stainless tube.
This pic shows a YJ Borla header extension adapter I created.
4.0 head 2.25" YJ / chopped X-over Borla extension and stepdown to CJ spec 2" Borla driver's side cat back.

Re: Catalytic Converter Question and great Borla deal

I got my adapter from a local auto parts store. They shouldn't be hard to find.
