$75 EGR valve only lasts 2 years?

Bummer scenario: 88 YJ, 258, EGR valve, dealer only item , 75 clams, YJ fails emissions, high NOx, points to EGR valve, Pete checks EGR valve, finds it doesn't move when you put vacuum to it , Pete determines EGR valve is bad, it's only 2 years old, and then Pete gets disgusted. Try using a little spray carb cleaner. Spray down the inside of the valve, let it soak in, spray it again, drain it out... do that 'bout 5 times. The see if the pintle will move. Sometimes the pintle shaft will just carbon up and stick open, or closed, or where-ever. Give it a try.

THAT IS ONE AWESOME PIECE OF INFO Sas87 YJ!!!! Give that man a cold frosty beverage of his choice!!!!!

Thanks too, Larry, I will try to see if that helps, but I can move it by hand, so I'm pretty sure it's not stuck. It could be that the vacuum path is carboned up, though, so I will try to clean it up. I had worked on the Jeep all day, and that was the last thing I did was to check the valve, and got frustrated with it.

I'll call my local NAPA today. Every place I went 2 years ago said it was dealer only, and I started the search again yesterday to find "....we don't have a listing on that..." . Woohoo!!!

Thanks a lot guys!!!!

Re: $75 EGR valve only lasts 2 years?

are you using headers? my 4.2 didnt like egr's either and they would only last a couple of months. I plugged the hole...I think its the headers letting too much exhaust in burning the bladder...but what do I know its good to know im not the only one with stupid problems.

Re: $75 EGR valve only lasts 2 years?

Sometimes you gottta make these parts guys work a little bit .see if you can cross reference it against a ford six or something.
the one I have on my 80 CJ is an aftermarket as well as the one I just put on my kids Chevy Cavalier `87.If you go with the aftermarket one it will come with a variety of metering washers ,so it is helpfull if you have the gasket from your old EGR because it also had a specific hole in it and the size should be stamped in the gasket.match it up with one of the aftermarket washers.
no body had the diverter valve for my `80 either even the dealer didnt have it ....can't be the one from the computer years either...I finally had the guy look up a 79 ford pick up I-6 and they had one of those and it is exactly what I needed.
