new purchase

I am looking at a 83 cj7 with a rebuilt 258 and 4 speed. Anything in particular to be aware of? It has one piece rear axles already. New to the jeep world, IH guy, but I don't carry any grudges. It's nice to look at used vehicles without asking just how rusted is rusted.

Re: new purchase

Howdy, welcome to the Board. I have a few Scouts myself, but they're rusted and have been rebuilt a few times. It's also why I switched to jeeps.

Check the rear frame by the gas tank, on the inside, if it's going to rust, it'll rust there first.

'83 is a good year, widetrack axles, and the 258 is a good motor (IHC even used them). If the tranny has a straight shifter to it, it's a good one, if it's got a curved shifter, it's a weaker one (but may still hold up) and if you plan on beating on it off-road you might want to upgrade. Otherwise it's a good jeep, especially with the 1-piece axles.

Re: new purchase

Check the frame all the way front to back. Body mounts, there are 11. The 258's came with Carter BBD's which are crappy, and by 1983 they had the computer controlling the ECM and carb. check the wiring to see how butchered it is, emissions equipment, and see how it runs (it might run fine when you check it out but run like crap in the morning).
