Re: has anyone narrowed a 14bolt?

Hey Brian
I havent narrowed a FF 14bolt but I did just added a FF 14bolt to PYRO that was out of a dually tow truck. These axels are only 62" between wheel mounting surefaces. It's a little wider than a wide track but not very. Just a thought, if you didn't already know this.

Doesn't the FF hub stick out a lot? I know you're not running the dual rear wheels, how far does the rim stick out?

ya brian.. a friend of mine up here has a d60 out of a dualie.. and its short.. something like 61 or 62 inches.. except it was from a real old dualie.. so its 16 spline... but ya.. if you are looking for narrow.. that is the way to go..

Re: has anyone narrowed a 14bolt?

well i just got back from a small jyard and all the 14bolts were 67" wide. i don't think that they were dually rears though. there was a dana70 dually rear but it measured 65" wms to wms. still too wide. i am going to have to find a 62" wide dually rear because i looked at the 14bolt shafts and they can't be cut down. the splined area is larger than the rest of the shaft. i really wish the dana70 would have been right because it had 5.13 gears in it. oh well i'll find one and then narrow a front 60 to match.

What about cutting the D70 down? How were the shafts in it?

Re: has anyone narrowed a 14bolt?

the wheels were on it and i couldn't get a good whack on it to break the seal. i'll go back and take a 4way next time so i can take the wheels off. this may be an option but if the dually 14bolt rears measure 62" then i'll save my $$ and just use one of them. i have a guy that is supposed to be coming tomarrow to buy my axles and if so dana60 front here i come!

Re: has anyone narrowed a 14bolt?

Hey Jeepn
I have 10" wide rims with a 5" backspacing, the axel bolts on the hub are 1/2" in from the outside edge of the rim.

Re: has anyone narrowed a 14bolt?

Hey Brian
Another advantage to the FF 14 bolt is that a new Detroit Locker is only a little over 300 bucks. You might want to consider swapping to disc brakes too, I did this and lost about 100 lbs of axel weight.
