Re: Scout 44 in to a 79 CJ7?

You will definately have to move spring perches. Narrow track CJ AMC 20 is 50.5" http://www.off-road.com/jeep/swb/articles/specgrid.htm. The Scout 44 in my garage is 59" from WMS to WMS.

There was an article in one of the mags (JP I think) a while back about a bolt in 44 swap for a narrow track CJ. I believe you needed an axle from early 70's Commando?
IMHO, I think that wider is better anyways.

It's about 4" wider per side than the narrow track AMC 20. You'll also need to move the spring perches in 2" per side. I swapped one into my '81 Scrambler, which was narrow track.

72 and 73 Commandos had Dana 44 rears and Dana 30 fronts. The T-case was a Dana 20. I think the standard gear ratio is 3.73

Thanks for the great help guys. Now I just need to decide if I really want the tires sticking out that far.

Re: Scout 44 in to a 79 CJ7?

I don't think it's too wide, but then I swapped in the front as well.

The '71 Commando also has the 30 spline, 1 piece shaft D44 rear. Mine has 3.73 gears.

Re: Scout 44 in to a 79 CJ7?

the extra width can really help in the stability department. the scout axles are wider than the stock jeeps axle but (imo)not too wide.
