How to check diode assembly(alternator)

the alternatore on my jeep has always been screwy, Sometimes it hardly charged the battery and sometimes it worked fine. Well its finally going south, it feels like it has enough juice to run the engine but not enough to charge the battery. Its only putting out 11 volts on the charging cycle.I pulled it apart And everything looks good. The brushes are good and the wires, it spins freely. My question is can A guy check the diode assembly or do you need to take it to a garage to get it checked out. thanks

I need to get a girlfriend I'm getting to close to my jeep.
