Gear ratios

I have a 1979 CJ-7 with a Dana 30 with 4,10 ratio up front
and I picked up this Dana 44 rear with 4.27 gears with a detroit and was wondering if I could run with it for off road use only and not on the street. How would it act or is the ratio too far off. I don"t want to put the transfer case in a bind and break something?

Re: Gear ratios

I just dug up my own answer. Randys ring and pinion says you can be up to 2% off. So 4.27/4.10=1.04 or 4%

Re: Gear ratios

Should run same ratio or your likely to start breaking things, drive any hard surface and it will cost you more to repair damage than to now change one of the gears.
