360, ? ,D300, strong 4 speed,not much$

I am in the process of installing a 360 in my 83CJ7, and want to keep my D300. I want a 4 speed that is basically a bolt up and not spend too much money. I drive it work daily, 30 miles a day, but go 4wheelin almost every weekend. There aren't many rocks in Florida so it will be more trails, mud, and sand. I'm new to this, have always been stock on previous 82 Scrambler, 83 CJ7, 83 CJ7,72 CJ5, and 95 Cherokee, but I have found one I like and am doing a little modifications. Any info and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Mike

In order of the best/strongest replacements (IMHO)...

T-18 with 6.32:1 first gear or a T-176

T-176 is cheapest option. Not as strong as T-18, but it did come coupled to Dana 300 from factory I believe; whereas you will need to use an adapter to couple a T-18 to that Tcase. Advance Adapters unit is $500; Novak industries makes one for less.

I found a good Ford 4 speed at the boneyard for $75. I love that granny low! The Adapter is the killer. No Excuses in NJ sells the AA adapter for $100 less, same adapter. I know that the Ford T-18 is not a bolt in tranny (without the adapter) but it is a good heavy duty tranny that will last for many years and parts are cheap and easy to come by.

A World Class T-4 from http://advanceadapters.com will bolt up without any mods such as bellhousing, skidplate or drive shafts. I'ts supposed to stand up to V8 power. I opted for it over other HD trannys because of the costly adaptors and mods. The WC shifts like a dream, more carlike than a truck tranny. Check it out.

Re: 360, ? ,D300, strong 4 speed,not much$

the ONLY low dollar option is a T176
everything else either requires an adapter ($400-$600) or the cost of the tranny is over $800

you can find a boneyard T176 for a few hundred, maybe cheaper if your lucky.
it bolts right to an AMC bellhousing, and a dana 300

Yes; this info was blatantly stolen by me from jeepgod's website. Check it out, it has loads of good information.
