Sanding fender flares

Someone gave me their used TJ fender flares and the front pair have a little discoloration on them. I was thinking of sanding them a bit with some fine sandpaper to get the color back, has anyone tried this. I'm still looking for ideas on what to do with the front flares if anyone has pics of a cj with trimmed fenders( almost like a flattie) and tj flares let me know.
