T176 or not?

I have a chance to pick-up a "NEW" T-176 for $300.00.

I'm having second toughts about it, I currently have the T-150 and hate it!

Who can tell me about the T-176, is it a good trans or should I pass it up?

Keep Jeep-n

Good tranny, and that's a decent price for a new one.

Re: T176 or not?

It's a strong tranny, and will work well with your 304.
Go for it!

I have a few spare D300's if you can't find one. Not sure if they're a direct mate to a T-176, but they are jeep D300's.

Re: T176 or not?

Mine works good behind my 302. The tranny was used and I found it in a junk yard. My only complaint is that from time to time, I can jam up the shifter between gears. I've developed a better shifting pattern, so this problem has seased. Otherwise, the tranny is fine. Low gear could be lower, and if I had my pick, I would have skipped this tranny and went right to the Ford NP435 (or T18). But that would only to get the super low first.

You didn't mention anything about a transfercase, I don't think the T176 ever came with the D20. You might want to consider this if you don't have a D300. Extra costs of adapters or new transfercase.

Re: T176 or not?

The T-176 came in the '80s Full-size Pick-ups. It had big V-8s in front of it and driver's-drop transfercases behind it. NP 'cases and D-300s will bolt right up. Its a stout tranny, no doubt about it.

Re: T176 or not?

$300 for a "new" T176 is a good price. I paid over twice that for my rebuilt T176, but it also included swapping my T4 bellhousing and driveshafts for T176 ones. As mentioned, the T176 is a good tranny and holds up to V8's.
