Bad Trans in 97 TJ?

Hey guys, just popped over from the Chevy BBS. My cousin has a 1997 Wrangler 4cylinder 5 speed with a 3 or 4 inch cheapy lift. Hes running 33x12.50x15s. The things still under warranty, but when the trans. recently took a crap after a push-start the dealer charged him $2200 for a new one! OUCH! I knew the 5 speeds weren't bulletproof, but this things only been off-road like twice, and he babies it. I TOLD him to get a 4.0L/auto or 5 speed and the hardtop, but he couldn't wait! Is this common with a 5 speed and larger tires? Oh, I think it had P225/70R15s stock. Should he have done a gear swap for the tires? Thanks.

Re: Bad Trans in 97 TJ?

Should have lasted longer than that. His jeep has the AX-5 transmission, not as strong as the AX-15 put in the 6 cylinder TJ. I know of guys running 33's with their 4 cyl, beating on them as well without any problems. Too bad the dealership wouldn't cover it, I'd look around and talk to others, another one might still honor the warranty, it's up to the individual dealerships. We had one dealership not honor our warranty, but another one said it was fine.

Re: Bad Trans in 97 TJ?

I found this on Ebay, but don't think they have a clue. They mention 4 cyl and 6 cly (which one?), and then mention "torque converter" in the description. http:// http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=532332662&r=0&t=0 Just thought I'd post it.

Also found this AX-5: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cg...961211&r=0&t=0
