Timing Control?

I have done a Computer bypass on my 88 yj 4.2 carter, but my timing is constantly alternating between 6*ATDC and 9*BTDC?
Does the ignition module control timing to?
The vacuum advance works fine, but I know it is not supposed to do this.
Is there a mechanical thing in the distributor that is screwed?
thnx.

Re: Timing Control?

You have a mechanical advance device in the distributor. This is why timing is set @ 1600rpm. It takes the mechanical advance out of the picture...If you have a repair manual, it will explain what is going on in the distributor and how to test to see if everything is working. Good luck....

Re: Timing Control?

The ignition module does not advance or retard the timing. The knock sensor sends a signal to the ECM. This is what controlled the timing. And the control is only a few degrees, nothing major. But since you have done the Nutter Bypass the problem goes back to:

Distributor,
Timing Chain/gears or,
Vacuum.
