Rear Main Seal -- Bugger won\'t budge!

Anybody have experience with removing a stuck upper-half rear main seal on a 258? Supposed to be able to tap one end and have the other end pop out so you can grip it with pliers. That is, if the sucker isn't ten years old and stuck in there like an Alabama tick! I've pushed, hammered, and even tried using the jack (yes, the jack!) to apply upward pressure with a screwdriver. Can't grip one end with needle-nose pliers either.

So here I sit, out of ideas, contemplating that $500 the shop quoted me to replace the seal.

Anybody have any tips? Attached photo gives you an idea of what I have been cursing at the past couple of hours.

Many Thanks,
DesertRat

I have always used a piece of brass rod as a punch,my punch is about 8 inches long 1/2 " diameter, with
the end filed down square and about 1 inch up the punch, to just fit in the hole the seal is in.Never had it fail yet

no! don't give in! you can do it!
i have not attempted this job yet so i can only watch and learn. i have done rear main seals on other rigs along with auto tranny front seals..........
well anyway that is an excelent pic you took-great lighting!
needle nose pliers suck! i'm sure you are going to use some regular pliers when you can get a grip or no room?
i am guessing the jack trick won't work as well as a sharp blow.
good luck

and just for drill look under"engine", then "rear main seal"

I'm with Lonestar, drive it out with a punch. Line up the punch with the wire part of the seal. Worked on my old 304.

just make sure you use a soft metal punch.. ie. brass.. aluminum.. so you dont scare the inner surface..

Thanks for the replies, guys. Sounds like I'm going to have to muscle the thing out or die trying!

So where do you get a 1/2" dia brass rod ... ? Plumbing section of hardware?

I sure hope I can get this thing out, otherwise I'll have to pay those shop guys to drop the tranny and transfer case and get at it that way I suppose. I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

Any other tips are welcome!

Re: Rear Main Seal -- Bugger won\'t budge!

I recently noticed my NAPA store had a full display of brass punches (drifts) with knurled tops.
From a skinny taper all the way to a thick, straight 1" job ...
(the one you are supposed to use to drive out a D300 TC intermediate shaft).
- wish I had all of 'em in a drawer here at home -

Try:

1. Loosen all the other Crank bearings journal bolts just a wee bit.
2. This drops the Crank away from the block.
3. It may drop enough to let you take out the uppper half of the seal.
4. When you get it out... don't forget to retorque all the bolts.

As for a cheap brass punch/drift, they do make brass bolts..
