oil pressure

I have an 87 YJ with a 258, when its cold the oil pressure gauge reads fine , after about 15 minutes the gauge is reading zero, I hope its only the gauge but i dont know what else to check does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: oil pressure

My '88 did a similiar thing.. but eventually stayed near 0. It was the Oil Pressure Sending Unit on the side of the block. Its relatively cheap to replace (I think I spent $25).. and straight forward to swap the new one in. Only hard part is that its kinda akward to get to. Its on the engine block way below the battery tray.

Re: oil pressure

ITs got to be the gauge, if you had no pressure you engine would be banging and pinging and clicking like crazy. One thing to check before you buy the sending unit. If you pull you instrument cluster out(the one with the oil, temp, batry, gas It isn't that hard to do) You will find that all the gauges plug into a kind of paper circuit board. This always corrodes and can send the wrong or no signal. You just take a file and clean the contacts off a little. this was the case on my jeep. Once a cleaned the contacts off it worked like a damn and the good thing is it costs you nothing. I would try that before buying a sendind unit.

I need to get a girlfriend I'm getting to close to my jeep.

Re: oil pressure

I have already checked the gauge ribbon and that thing looks terrible, i priced a new one thru the dealer and its only 25.00 but i think i might go to all mechanical gauges.
