SHOCK TRAVEL QUESTION

i have an 83 cj7 with a spring over and stock wrangler springs. i just got a set of rancho 9000's from a local 4wheel drive shop. he took a cupple of measurements on the ground and looked at it on a ramp (real fast). it ends up that i have about 8 inches of downward travel and two inches upward travel with the shock he gave me. the length eye to eye when on level ground is about 18 inches. the bump stop is about five inches away. the shock he sold me is the 9010. is this right or should i go with a shorter shock. also am i going to bottom out on normal driving conditions with only two inches upward travel. and will it hurt the shock if it bottoms out during off roading? thanks

Re: SHOCK TRAVEL QUESTION

Will it hurt the shock? Yep, it'll downright ruin it, you'll eventually snap the ends off, if you don't rip off the shock mount first.

Here is the way I measure for shocks. First, forget the ramp stuff, who cares about extended length, you want the longest possible right? So mainly we're concerned with the collapsed length. If your at rest length between the shock eyes is 18", and the distance between the bumpstop and axle is 5", then you should have a shock that is 13" when compressed. I like to go a little further, so I subtract another 1/2". So you're looking for the longest length shock you can get that has a minimum collapsed length in the 12.5" area.

Re: SHOCK TRAVEL QUESTION

Jeepn

If he used a 9113 would he only have 2.65" extended travel? Thats the longest one closest to the 12.5" collapsed. That shock extends to 20.65" and he is sitting at 18" eye to eye. It collapses to 12.82". What happens if you top out a shock real hard as opposed to the obvious bottom out?

Re: SHOCK TRAVEL QUESTION

Yes, he'd rip the eyes off the shock. The problem here is shock mounts and SOA. SOA's have TON's of flex, which is a good thing, but sometimes you have to move the shock mounts to run a longer shock. For instance, if you were to angle the shock mounts at the top, you'd be able to run a longer shock and have it work to your advantage. I don't advocate adding longer bumpstops to run a longer shock, it limits the articulation.

I'll do some calcs and find out how to best set them up. I'm going to try to use the RS9110 because he has them already. They may be a little short to use effectively.
