How to tell if I have a TF 999 or TF 904?

I have followed every post I saw that discussed the TF [Thai] tranny. [tranquil] I have always believed I had a TF [Thai] 999, but with reading some of the post I begin to wonder. I have read the Jeep spec chart and it says all 1980 to 1986 CJ's [clad] with I-6 came with TF [Thai] 999. I have a 1983 CJ7 with the I-6, DANA 300. I am planning on putting in a rebuilt 304 soon and want to know exactly without a shadow of a doubt that I have a TF [Thai] 999. I have planned to run the TF [Thai] 999 until I have problems and switch to a TF [Thai] 727. Can anyone tell how to idinify [idiocy] exactly which tranny [tranquil] I have. Maybe if there are any differences in the TF [Thai] 999 and TF [Thai] 904 (the pan???) that I could visually look at that would tell me for sure or an ID [Ida] number. I will install an external cooler to help keep it cool for the year or so I hope to run it.

Here's the donor vehicle chart for your 83 CJ7....

TF 999/904 Compatibility Chart

Model___________Year_________Style___________Engin e___________Axle Ratio

CJ Series_______81 AT__________CJ7______________258ci
________________81 AT__________CJ7______________360ci
________________81 AT__________CJ8______________258ci
________________82 84 AT____CJ7______________258ci
________________82 84 AT____CJ8______________258ci
Cherokee________82 83 AT_____________________258ci___________2.73
Grand Wagoneer__82 84 AT_____________________258ci___________2.73
J-series Truck__82 84 AT_____________________258ci___________2.73
Wagoneer________82 84 AT_____________________258ci___________2.73

It's very difficult to see any difference between the two externally. There are little differences between the the 904 and 999, except the 904 has one less clutch disk and plate. The TF999, TF904 and TF904 all share the same rebuild kit.

IMHO the best thing to do is to find the trnasmission number, its' located on the drivers side of the transmission. Wipe off the flat machined surface just above the pan and below the shifting lever shaft. That's where you'll find the number. Take the nubmer to the dealer and have the parts counterman look up which transmission it is. It's just simply the easiest manner in which to identify the two transmissions.

However even this will be confusing. As example:

In my 83 CJ7 I have what I thought was a TF999.
Chrysler says it's a TF904.
Becasue only 904's were supplied that year.
It is the original transmission
The transmission number says it's a TF999.
I did a transmission rebuild.
All the clutch disks fit into the clutch.

So I guess it really was TF999 after all. Happy New Year and Safe Jeepin'
