Well I have an 87 YJ with the 4.2, stock except for the TR upgrade. My starter was making a godawful squealing/grinding noise, and also a banging noise when I was cranking it so I brought it to my mechanic. He suggested installing a new starter. When he had the starter off, he said the flywheel looked ok, maybe a little worn (My Jeep only has 27,000 original miles).
Anyway, after the new starter was installed, it still made the same noise, and the banging noise is still there but a little quieter. Has anyone had this problem and is there any way to fix it without changing the flywheel? Maybe a shim on the starter? Any help would be much appreciated cause this noise is driving me crazy and I don't have 500 for a new flywheel and labor. Thanks!
