Manual trans for AMC360/Dana300?

Since my engine is on it's way out (I6 258), I am thinking about transplanting an AMC 360 from a '76 wagoneer which I believe has the BorgW 1505 or 1305 auto tranny. I currently have a T176 4 speed which I am told will not hold up to an AMC 360. I am looking for a 4 or 5 speed tranny which directly bolts up to a Dana 300 transfer case and an AMC 360. Are there any transmissions out there besides the T-15A 3 speed that are worth taking a look at?

I had a Jeep T-5 in my 84 CJ7. They say that they aren't the strongest Trans but I had it behind two motors and I never had any problems.

I have a friend who is running the 360/T176 combination and it is working out fine for him. You might want to try it before you swap... unless you're looking for better gearing. I'm including the link to a "360 Swap Guide" post.

I say run it until you manage to kill the tranny and just keep an eye out in the mean time for other options...

I think if you are a sensable driver it will last just fine.

Uuum, there aren't any other decent ones that directly bolt to the D300 and the AMC 360. You already have the T-176, which is a good tranny, and unless I'm mistaken, the T-177 & T-178's came in the J-trucks behind the AMC 360 already (they have 1 or 2 different gears but are otherise the same). I'd run the T-176 you have, it's not bad, otherwise you're going to spend a lot on adapters. The T-5 isn't anywhere near the tranny the T-176 is, not that it's great compared to the T-18's, but it's the best of the 80's anyway.

The T-176 was behind the V-8 in the '80 CJs. It's strong enough for your 360.

Re: Manual trans for AMC360/Dana300?

Jeepn hit the nail on the head with that one. The T-176 & T-177 4 speeds came factory behind the 360's in the J-trucks, so they are plenty strong for what you want. The only down fall to the T-176 & T-177 4 speeds is that the front and rear bearings don't last for a long time. So, if I were you I would take the tranny to the shop and have them put in these new bears and you will be ready to go!

How come no one likes the T150? It's one of the strongest transmissions Jeep ever had. I have one behind my performance 304 and I love it. What am I missing?

Re: Manual trans for AMC360/Dana300?

It is a good tranny, but it only has a 3:1 first, is only a 3 speed, and doesn't directly bolt to the D300, which is what he asked. A capable tranny, don't get me wrong, and great for the road, but not so desirable for towing, hauling heavy loads, or wheeling.
