258 RUNS BAD WHEN COLD-NOT THE CHOKE

i have an 83 cj7 with a 258 and the bbd carb. the problem i'm having is that the engine is not wanting to keep running while cold. i start it and let it run for about a min. in the mornings. then drive on the freeway for about a mile (kind of chuging and cutting out a higher rpm's) to the next exit. when i come to the light the idle speed goes way down and it usualy dies. but when the engine finnaly warms up it runs fine. i tries to figure out the problem this weekend. i took apart the carb and cleaned the inside out. then adjusted the carb and checked the timing. same prob. the thing runs awsome when up to normal temp. but until then it wants to die unless i'm on the throttle a little. please help

Re: 258 RUNS BAD WHEN COLD-NOT THE CHOKE

Is your air hose form the manifold to the air cleaner intact. The original one would have disintigrated by now. You may not be getting proper heating of the air before warm up. There is also a heat sensitive flapper type valve in your stock air cleaner setup that works off the above mentioned heat. The BBD is a crappy 50s technology carb, so anything not right with the way it was intended to run will affect it.

I agree with cjjeepercreeper on this one.
There is a lot of 50's (or older) technology on the jeeps that weren't made in the last few years.
Do the usual, check the vacuum lines, fuel lines, EGR, thermal tubes, intake air diverter (flapper in the air cleaner horn)...
My hunch is you will find the problem in your carb support hardware....
Although the 'Chugging' at highway speeds has me a bit puzzled for it to be a carb problem that 'Clears up when warm'...

If none of that works, you may want to try an ignition upgrade.
Better coil and cap.
Lots of people are getting good results in cold starting and better running.
The older oil filled coils do some pretty weird stuff when they get real cold...
It's worth looking into.
