high Idle crackling start

I have an '87 YJ with a 258, a rebuilt carter, TR upgrade and MSD. Last night, when I started the Jeep after sitting out in the cold weather for a few days, it started up fine, but when I listened to it in high idle it sounded like there were some funny crackling noises coming from under the hood. Sounded like some mini firecrackers going off. Not really loud, but just intermittent and there. I did not open the hood, but from underneath the Jeep I was not able to see anything strange. Any idea what this sound might have been and if it is anything to be concerned about? Thanks.

Re: high Idle crackling start

Start it up at night with the hood open. Look for arcing of the coil, coil wire, distributor cap, or the spark plug wires. A little moisture, or condensation could do exactly what you've describes. Ofen this would be accompanied by a miss, or a missfire.

Re: high Idle crackling start

Well, it's possible that there was some moisture. Is this dangerous at all? The Jeep always seems to misfire when I first start it up till it warms up and is in low idle. It kind of just skips a bit, if that makes sense. Any way to correct this? Is it possible I did something wrong when installing the TR upgrade? I think this was happening before I put the MSD in, but I'm not sure if it happened before the TR upgrade. Anyway, I will try to start it up tonight with the hood up and see if i see or hear anything. thanks for the help.
