What makes a carb blow its load?

I fired the CJ this morning, and it was fine for a few seconds. Then the idle dropped, then gas started pouring on the ground right around the bellhousing. I pop the hood, and my intake manifold is filled with gas (all the little pockets on the top)!!!!

It seems like it's coming from under the carb toward the front of the motor. It's from below the fuel-in hose, so it's not that. What else could it be!?

Thanks y'all!

EDIT: It just stopped raining, so I went outside and cleaned up the gas. I started the Jeep to try and see where the gas was spilling from, but now it's not doing it! Agh! WTF!? Do you think it's safe to drive? I've GOT to get to work!

Re: What makes a carb blow its load?

I bought a reman carb last year and there are two rivet type things just below the fuel line that were leaking. Maybe one of those blew out. Are you sure it's not the fuel line?

Re: What makes a carb blow its load?

Could one of the gaskets that is sandwiched between the carb. and the intake manifold have suddenly gone bad on you, thus allowing fuel to leak out near the bottom?

Sounds like the bullet shaped valve under the float in the bowl of your carb is stuck open ...

If it's a 2100 it might be the power valve in the front under the fuel inlet. I'm not sure if it would dump that much fuel that quick though and it would probably continue to leak. My other suggestion would be the float stuck open for some reason. If that was the case you usually have fuel coming out from all over but I have had stuck floats that come and go like you had.

Re: What makes a carb blow its load?

Well I drove over to a friend's house. He's one of those fix-all types with three of everything. Anyway, he said "Yer float's stuck...whack it with a hammer."

I did, and it's fine.
